Freestyle Soccer - Something new!

So you must have seen those crazy Nike soccer commercials in the early 2000s in which professional players did cool soccer tricks. Maybe you’ve always known of it but have not known the actual freestyle term.

Freestyle football, also known as freestyle soccer in North America, is the art of juggling with a football using feet, knees, lower legs, chest, shoulders, and head while simultaneously performing creative, skillful moves and keeping the ball airborne. Similar in style to keepie uppie and kemari, it has become a widespread sport across the world and is played by many people.

Freestyle football has existed for some time, but it has seen a surge in popularity as a result of global advertising campaigns and digital media sharing. In the early 21st century, Nike began an advertising campaign which relied heavily on the freestyle form of football, including video clips of freestyle performances. These advertisements featured famous players such as Ronaldinho and Edgar Davids. Many link such mass media attention to the start of the freestyle craze. In the YouTube era, however, many previously non-famous players have risen to prominence, and internet searches easily yield thousands of videos by amateur “freestylers” around the world.

Some of the reknown freestylers are Rickard Sjolander of Sweden, who goes by the nickname of “Palle,”, Nam the Man of Ireland, Soufiane Touzani of the Netherlands, Sean and Matt from France, John Farnworth and Abbas Farid of the United Kingdom, Pawel Skora of Poland, Fx and Rocco of Hungary, Yo, Tatsulow, and Hirokazu of Japan, and Jeon Kwon of South Korea.

There are tons of great freestyle soccer websites now. The biggest English website for soccer freestyle is Beyond Football. Beyond Football offers freestyle soccer videos, tutorials on different tricks, a list of the top 20 freestylers, and a huge English speaking freestyle community. The soccer forum has over a thousand members who talk about freestyle and other soccer related topics. If you think freestyle is cool, check out this freestyle video from one of the members on Beyond Football. Make sure to visit the website and sign up for an account.

NBA Fantasy

My draft is scheduled for this Sunday and I’m excited for it once again. Everyone is on the look out for the sleeper, and I have my eyes on a few of them. Personally, I think Thornton from the Clippers will have a huge season. Baron Davis will be his point guard and should set him up plenty. Elton Brand has moved on to the Philadelphia Sixers so Thornton’s minutes should be plenty. Another sleeper I have is Devin Harris. He should average about 20 points per game and around 6-7 assists per game. Beasley from Miami should also have a big impact in his rookie season. So far in the pre-season he’s had his solid share of 20 point games. This is a good sign from the rookie. Dwayne Wade is no sleeper and should be a top 3 pick. He’s finally over his injury and should blow up the stat sheets every night. And last but not least, keep a close eye on the New York Knicks. With their new coach they will be running and gunning. Expect increased production from most players.

Dallas Mavericks Fan

I’ve been following the Dallas Mavericks for about 8 years now and it’s been a very bumpy ride. We had a chance to win it all two seasons ago but threw it away against Miami in the final. You would think being up 2-0 and up 15 points in the 3rd quarter of the third game would seal it, but no. Wade and the referees had something completely different in mind.

Gotta move on though. This pre-season has been very good for the Mavericks. Gerald Green has played very well and Dirk looks at his best. I have a feeling Josh Howard will have his best season this year. He’s finally putting the bad things behind him and can now focus on his game. Kidd should be better off as well under a new coach who will allow him to call the plays and allow the team to run. Avery Johnson is gone and I couldn’t be happier. The first game for the Mavericks is against the Houston Rockets who will probably be without Tracy McGrady for their first game.

NBA Season Almost Here

It seems like the last season only ended a few weeks ago, but it’s been well over three months since we’ve seen any competitve NBA games.  The Lakers ended up losing to the Boston Celtics during last season’s NBA Final.  I had predicted the Celtics would win after seeing them control the NBA throughout the regular season.  I wasn’t going out on a limb but it still takes a lot to believe a 20-win team can win the entire thing the following season.  The whole team seemed to be fired up for the season and they played every game as if it was a game seven in the finals.  This is the attitude that I will be looking for during the first month of the NBA season.  The team that comes out to play that hard and has a vocal leader like Garnett on the court will be my front-runner for the Championship.

England and USA National Teams

England is doing well right now but let’s not get wet over that. They have one of the easiest qualification groups.

Their win against Kazakhstan looked nice at the end of the game. What most don’t realize though is that they were tied 0-0 until the 52nd minute. That’s England’s issue right there… they are still not creative enough to bust through the organized and structured teams. Once Kazakhstan got scored on for the second time through an own-goal, the flood gates opened. It should take England so long to break down a team like that. I realize they are doing better, but they are still not there yet.

As far as soccer in the US is concerned, I do think it’s improving but that doesn’t mean the game isn’t improving in other parts of the world. Players are getting better by the year in just about every country. The US is getting more talented, but you can’t tell me that other nations are not getting even more talented. Just look at all the young stars that are emerging all over the place. You can be 21 and a star on your national team now. The US is good, but it’s still a long way behind. I don’t think the work-rate alone is going to take them over the top.

October 20th - Premier League Summary

Premier League weekend summary: Hull City sitting in 3rd right now. Who would’ve thought that?! The same goes for Tottenham sitting in dead last, still without a win!

My prediction of Chelsea winning 3 trophies this season is still looking good. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them play better than this.

Man U is back on form as well. Ronaldo makes the difference so the commentators should be allowed to suck his balls. The same goes for Rooney. I know a lot of you hate him, and I’m not his biggest fan either (he’s English), but damn is he playing well right now.

Tottenham sucks nuts as well. What a joke. Those player should be held responsible. I don’t know what the deal with Ramos is either. On the sidelines and during post-game interviews, he acts like the team is sitting in 1st place. All come like it’s no big deal. Maybe he needs a wake up call. Yell at those cunts and get them to play at least half way up to their potential. Maybe they’ll win a game then.

The 3 Best Soccer Players

The best three soccer players in the world right now: Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Torres. Xavi barely missed out on my top 3. Van der Vaart has been ridiculously good in the past few months. It’s going to take a full season of this kind of form to convince me he’s a top 3, even a top 5 player though. Messi has been unreal for a long time now. Has anyone been watching him play for Barcelona? It doesn’t matter how many players are around him, he’ll do something insane AND productive just about every time.  It’s really unbelievable, and to me he’s the best without a doubt right now.

New adiPures Coming Out

A new style of the adiPures is coming out in January 2009. I was going to buy some new ones this week but a guy in the soccer store showed me the new ones that will be coming out. They are pretty nice. They’ll come out in black, and two pairs in white - one with red stripes and one with black stripes, so look out for those.
